Avengers: Endgame has been dominant at the box office this year, setting records upon records. But it has already lost one of its records – to an indie film that’s been generating a huge amount of buzz.

Marvel’s blockbuster epic did hold the US box office record for best per-screen-average in 2019, with an average of $76,601 per theatre across 4,662 locations on its opening weekend (via Variety).

Then came The Farewell, starring Awkwafina. This past weekend, the acclaimed movie opened in four locations (two in New York and two in Los Angeles) and averaged a whopping $87,833.

The film follows a Chinese-American woman named Billi (Awkwafina) who learns that her grandmother in China is dying from terminal lung cancer. Billi travels to China to visit her Nai Nai, but struggles to cope with her family keeping the diagnosis a secret from the matriarch.
